Recommended GPU + CPU combination?

Hi,

We're planning on introducing Indigo into our workflow, and we are deciding on servers to buy for rendering.

There is some concern over the CPU bottleneck, so what GPU (preferably refer to AMD brand) will be suitable for use with 8 core opteron 6000 servers?

Also will we expect to see higher performance gain adding an extra 8 core CPU, or adding another whole CPU + GPU server to the network?

Strange, we're doing exactly the same thing! I just purchased an indigo licence and am awaiting my key! I would love to know what others suggest for hardware?

Our budget is fairly high so I'm looking at adding two i7-2600k 3.4ghz, Quadro FX 3800 and 16 GB servers to our network.

I've never done this before so if anyone can make any suggestions that would be fantastic!

Hi Will,

We've tested with a FirePro V5800 from AMD and found it to work well in accelerating renders with an Intel Q6600 CPU - something faster than this will be required for the 8 core CPU.

Indigo only supports using a single GPU for now, however adding more CPU power is always useful as:

1. Sometimes the CPU methods (bidirectional) can be more efficient than GPU accelerated path tracing
2. With a modern GPU, the CPU is often the bottleneck.
