Using my 'prize' I did a quick render. Used the Diamond material from the materials database and added a diamond for good measure. Small emitter as light source

This magic cube is a great tool to demonstrate the difference of unbiased versus biased engines. I don't believe that mental or V rays could compete here, visibly not.

I mean, for a similar output quality (if that's even possible) I'm pretty sure that their rendering time would become ridiculously astronomical compared with what users of biased engines would expect.

I would say it's possible. You need someone who knows how to use photon-mapping.
It won't be as exact, but it will be almost as good and very fast. ;o))

Well, I was talking about the refraction depth involved, TIR effects and such. Accuracy, mate.

You can crank ray depth up using mental ray, but then if you compare with an Indigo render you will find that the mental ray render has much less glares within the object. The thread you mentionned is about opaque, metallic objects. And yes, I'm aware about GI

Really something that should be demonstrated I believe.

I understand your point. Anyway, there are ways to solve things till some point.
And even for unbiased renderers like Indigo and the others exist things they
can't render yet. You can make some TIR tests on your own and you'll see.
I'll agree, it's not so important anyway. People are loving Indigo, fryrender
and Maxwell non the less.
