In the scene that I am working on, this tile comes out almost black.
I'd like to maintain the same color/shade of tile as the one on left but be able to show 'grout' via bump.

Don't know if it is the right solution, but a value of 2 turns out to be a HUGE one, for me; perhaps it's because of this that your mat renders unnatural. Just to see, try a smaller value, like 0.5 (it will still be a big value, you'll notice
): it should work better.
