Does Indigo RT support Bump maps and Displacement?

Post by Coen Naninck » Tue Apr 03, 2012 2:33 am

Attached is an image rendered with Indigo RT with a material loaded from the Material Library from this site but I don't see any bump or displacement in the image. When I preview the material in the Material Editor render view in SketchUp I do see these features work, but not in my render. Does RT not support these features?

Indigo RT certainly does support bump and displacement.

This issue is simply related to your scene (export) size, double check it to have real world values!
If your object is 5km big a bump & displacement of 1cm will not be visible ;)

Hi, thanks for replying. The curve you see in the image is approx. 80 cm wide and 180 cm high.

does your mesh have enogh polys to be displaced? Displacement shifts existing polys, but don't create any!
You need to subdiv your mesh by hand, or use Indigos subdiv feature to do so.

Otherwise simply raise the displacement / bump value for the material until you have a propper result :)

I'm going to hijack this thread a little, if that's OK. Are there any support for normal maps?

Not any. Vector displacement is not supported either.

If there are specific normal maps you would like to use, they should be converted to bump maps from within a third party application, like CrazyBump I assume.

regarding the better visual output they reach, compared to classic bump, in other (biased) render engines,
I would really like to see NM in Indigo...

How many do I need? I've tried this on a 6 sides (12 polygons or 6 SketchUp Faces) cube, subdivided it also a number of times, in both cases no luck. I have also created a curved surface of thousands of polygons and same result.

Can somebody share a SketchUp model here, anything, with a bump mapped texture on it so I can investigate it and see what I'm doing wrong?

Never mind, I figured it out. Cranked up the value in the SkIndigo Material Editor from 0.01 to 0.15 for Bump and 0.05 for Displacement. That had an effect.

Thanks guys.

A maybe useful hint for future work with displacement is the "random triangle color" option for diffuse materials.
A checkbox on the bottom of the Property Editor, that renders all the polys of your mesh in different color so you actually can see subdivision way better :)

Excellent argumentation, both a simple and powerfull feature. No hacks. Works best with view/lenght-dependent subdivisions.

Thanks Zom-B! I'll give that a try.

Your lighting setup also doesn't really lend itself to showing off the surface texture of your object. If you had more directional lighting, you would probably pick up the bump mapping a bit better.
