Skin test

Post by ryjo » Sun Feb 11, 2007 6:29 am

Hello,

Here is a head with epidermis/dermis surface/medium:

Image

settings
melanin_fraction: 0.5
melanin_type_blend: 0.5
hemoglobin_fraction: 0.001

epidermis surface: glossy transparent, exponent: 10

This was done using two mesh surfaces, one for epidermis and one for dermis. The dermis surface has the vertices translated in the direction of the vertex normal by -0.25 mm (the thickness of epidermis).

Very nice pic!
Only the teeth appear... yellow^^
The mesh looks a bit Asiatic, but the colour of the skin is more like n middle or north europe
How is it lit? Sun?

I don't know why the teeth are yellow, they are defined to be diffuse white. Maybe reflection from the skin?

The scene is illuminated by an env_map (exr).

Maybe, the thickness is wrong at the eyelids, since they are very thin. Also the Eyes may give an other SSS value... But it looks quite realsistc, nevertheless...

Yes, the thicknes of epidermis is 0.25 mm for the entire figure, which is too much for the eyelids. But its a test.

The skin tone was taken from the spec, page 5, lower right example, middle image:

Mhm, this skin examples are quite useful
I think, noone has a skin with 20% hemoglobin. It looks very unnatural..
Maybe, you should decrease the melanin blend beta/m value (This should make the skin look more asiatic, like the mesh...)

Very nice render Dude!!

a Bump map for the epidermis would be really great, or a backlight too :D
After all, a very clean image... how long did it cook???

I'm looking forward to some more skin renders, this result is veeeeery promissing

Yeah, I could try a different setting. Thanks for the input!

This wip is from about 50 minutes. A bump map would definetly make the skin more realistic, but I don't have any

Thanks for looking!

You're right: except of the swollen ears and eyes, it looks too perfect. No idea, where you can get a bump map.
50 min? how much GHz&RAM?

It's a core 2 duo (6600) with 2 GB ram.

Here is a render using more asian skin tone (see page 7 in the spec). The teeth look more white now.

The camera setting is 200mm lens, which may cause the ears to look bigger.

melanin_fraction: 0.15
melanin_type_blend: 0.0
hemoglobin_fraction: 0.001

render time: 1h15m

Yes, that's better^^
But: What are these edges in the skin? Is it, 'cause you didn't render it as long as before, this time?

Do you mean the patterns visible on the forehead? Those are more visible the longer the render goes, this has rendered about 20 mins longer. It is a low res model, ~55000 vertices.

Thanks for the map, but I don't think bump is supported by glossy transparent atm. I'll try it when it works.
