it seems i dont, so i thought instead of bugging the poor guy again id ask around.
Im trying to render a simple gold ring with a gem in it and the gem keeps coming out black...

Re: help with a semi transparent gem
I hope, smoothing is turned off?
And yes, turn off SSS... -except the gem shouldn't be clear...

Re: help with a semi transparent gem
Leave reinhard tonemapping alone, since the gem is the only light absorbing material in the sky (!) it has to be dark with reinhard tonemapping.
Also put the ring on some surface and use emitting ones for lighting.

Re: help with a semi transparent gem
well, actually...
don't forget the gold^^ it also absorps. If it didn't, it'd be a perfectly grey-white reflector (a perfect mirror) rather than a golden one...
