diffused light - light cone with diffuse filter

Post by F.ip2 » Fri Mar 16, 2007 5:08 am

Hi

how would you create a light box with a diffused light so it casts only very soft shadows???

I have an issue rebuilding this - to scatter the light ray directions.

Maybe -it would need tons of calculation- a sphere as lightsource with an other sphere (this also can be a .sphere) arround the lightsphere: It should have an SSS-mat with 0 absorbtion, but some uniform SSS!

I see, SSS, I did not think about that. technically you are right.

I made some tests with shooting lights into a light umbrella, wedge gave me the tip, but I had no big success with my results yet.

somehow i needed to crank up the light power significantly!

add cube. scale up. make it a light. done.

the larger the light source, the softer the shadows, the more diffuse the light. all the lightbox is is a very large lightsource (created by putting a flash bulb behind a diffuser so that the diffuser diffuses the light -> bigger lightsource -> softer light).

an SSS-mat would kinda act as a diffuser, wont it? Just be aware that you'd better use specular SSS that glossytransp-SSS, as 2nd one has energy loss...

Also very soft shadows mean the light source is quite wide (like an open, overcast sky). So make the light source bigger (yes a sphere can make sense, depending on the scene). Even if light is scattered at the source, light rays won't come from another point than the source itself (obviously :D), so size matters !
