Perhaps stupid question...

What material settings do I use for the type of fog seen in the volumetric caustic examples? Beyond turning on uniform SSS and setting a low precedence, I don't know what to do.

a uniform value of 0.05 works well. i think anywhere from 0.02 to about 0.2 would be good. also depends on the size of your scene. make sure everything is to scale (1 Blender Unit = 1 meter, same for other programs i think).

So nothing special to do with the absorption gain or anything?

no, unless you want to make an opaque or colored fog, which could be cool too. i did a test (http://www2.indigorenderer.com/joomla/f ... php?t=1674) using a uniform value of 0.1 and absorption of 0, 0, 0.
