I was a long-time AMD user, I made the switch last year to the Q6600. It seems recently (since Intel launched the Core2) that AMD is falling somewhat behind Intel in terms of performance - however AMD remains a good choice when on a limited budget.

I was working with AMD since my Intel 386DX40 ...

Same here haha :D
Working with AMD since I had my 486DX66 back in the 90s :D

overnight renders of 8 hours become 3-4 hours with i7, and even less with a bit of an overclock :)

+ you can keep your current quad core system and add it to i7 as a network slave  8)

Yup, and suddenly you have 3x the rendering power. Muhahaha!

O.o OMG! Now, try to quadruple that or higher.... not that much and soon, animations in Indigo will become a plausible thing even for longer films! with any time-killer enabled, Indigo supports 'till now xD

btw, talking about time killers: will you ever fix and reimplement polarization? And what's about clouds? ^^ (Oh and, which hopefully is not THAT much of a time killer: Where is the particle support? xD)

Ok, back to topic: That processor is just amazing O.o

Fairly sure dual i7 is planned may only be with the extreme edition cpus though.

...which are just like normal Xeons! Skulltrail is such a waste of money... just get server/workstation hardware if you feel the need for performance!

Hard to find server boards with 16 lane pci-e slots. Especially 4 of them!!

Skulltrail is a niche product. Some of us can really use the performance it makes available. If you're a gamer thinking you can get better performance with skulltrail you're wasting your money. On the other hand if you are doing extreme 3d modeling, cad, or image editing skulltrail can be worth the money in time savings.

But for the average hobbiest user it's not cost effective.

I bet, Intel have some 8 core chips with two i7 chips stuck together in the works ;)

Intel road map - it's a matter of deciding when to jump in

Lynnfield is 32nm, so basicly an i7 die shrink. So a bit cooler and faster.
So in late 2010 we should see 6-8 core CPU parts

i7 920 is getting replaced in Q2 2009, so maybe a good idea waiting till then, for either a cheaper 920, or something better
