Hi BbB,
Attached is a pic describing something you may be interested in, asperity scattering.
Perhaps some method could be found of placing small hairs on the skin.

Hey, thanks for the link Ono. It's really funny you should mention that. I was looking at some reference photos earlier today that really emphasised these small hair on the skin and wondering how to do these. I must admit my heart sunk. I really can't think of a way that wouldn't involve particles or some kind of automated process.
(Of course, I got a loooooooong way to go before my models are realistic enough that I can start worrying about this :lol:

I think something like Suvakas's particle scatterer (For 3ds) would do the trick. Although it would be a challenge to get the hairs to orient in a particular direction as they tend to do in real life.
Then there's the question of what material to use for the hairs :)

Diffuse transmitter definitely. You don't really need reflections there.
