Post by eg2k6 » Tue Apr 03, 2007 8:24 am

Here is my first Indigo Render, "Snowman in the Forest".

modeled in blender, rendered in indigo 0.6 for 1 hour.

it looks like some sort of toy set. :)

Hi and welcome !

Cute snowman. The black areas on the trees look like a normal problem. Did you check your normals ?

ill try flipping the normals.

is there any way to flip the normals for more than one object at once?

EDIT: flipping the normals did not work. oh well.

it's caused by very sharp edges on objects with smooth normals :)
Probably edges that are more than 30 or 20 degrees.. I think..

can you render the pic from the other side?
Or remodel the trees with a higher verticle count...
Is the nose sepperated from the snowman?
If so: as it's 0.6, you wont use SSS, so you can erase the bottom of the nose, to get rid of those normal problems ;)
The same thing is possible with the trees, maybe, 'cause they're looking round enough... it may is, 'caus you let the bottoms of the cones in...
Except your plane, and spheres, everything has a normalproblem...
you should erase unneeded stuff, as long as you don't use transparent materials or SSS (or it should be mirrored)

looks great!
How is it lit?

Snowmen are still in vogue, eh? Cool stuff. I think you could try adding and Edgesplit modifier to the trees, hat and snowman's nose. Oh, and the tree trunks. That should sort out the black edges if the normals are all correct.

Look forward to more renders :)

Could you show us a wireframe of the trees with the "show normals" option ?

The normals are ok. As arneoog said, it's the sharp edge at the basis of the cones wich is smoothed by Indigo. Either bevel these edges (you'll loose sharpness), separate the basis from the cone (make 2 objects where there is one) or export these cones as *.obj.

When you export geometry as XML, for Indigo its either totally smooth or totally hard edged. Use these workarounds.

That's what the edgesplit modifier does. PLEASE try the edgesplit modifier. It will change your life.

Ok. Maybe not change your life. But it will most probably solve the problem at hand.
