Self Train Recreation
Self Train Recreation
thednx inspired me with their thread http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... =3&t=12674 to try something like this myself. I have chosen a render by well know UK arch viz specialist Iain Banks entitled 'Loft' for a number of reasons;
1. I think it is a very good render!
2. The lighting and textures are of very high quality (and I recognized a couple of them from cg textures) which is something I have really been trying to improve lately.
3. The scene is relatively simple (I am a sketchup user after all!)
4. The majority of the furniture I recognize as freely available from the internet.
So... here goes...
Wish me luck!

wow... i really like it! images like these take ages to get right...
Re: Self Train Recreation
Not 100%, but I have to say I'm pretty happy, and I've no more time to spend on this!
I would have to say that in a scene such as this with a lot of 'white' furniture and walls etc, the biggest surprise for me was how difficult it was to balance these. The sofa is practically brown in my Sketchup model to end up here, and the'black' wall is brown!
Big learning curve but a very useful exercise.
As alway C&C most welcome!

Hey bubs!
I like your version more than the original!
You did a very good work! Textures are really good and fit very well in the scene! only thing is that some minor piece of furniture looks a little chubbier than in the original image, and every little thing in the scene contributes to the general feeling. Apart from this, really good. Excellent lighting too!
MAYBE you should pump up a little the Photoshop section now

Far too kind! Thank you Pibuz!Pibuz wrote:Hey bubs!

I should have known that 'hawk-eye' Pibuz wouldn't miss that! I got my perspective slightly out (which you can see from where the skylight hits the edge of the image) so I had to stretch the vertical scale of the sofa to make it look right!Pibuz wrote:some minor piece of furniture looks a little chubbier than in the original image,
Not sure if you're being sarcastic here! Do you think the photoshop is too much? As a point of reference you can see the raw render vs the final image here. BTW I tweaked the colour of the brick wall since the previous post as it looked too warm to me when I saw it on a different monitor.Pibuz wrote:MAYBE you should pump up a little the Photoshop section now
Re: Self Train Recreation
Hi bubs, nice work, you nailed it.
One thing I noticed is that the monitor on the laptop is probably a lot too bright. Considering that there is sunlight in the room, I think the screen would appear a lot darker in real life.

Re: Self Train Recreation
Good spot! Nothing gets past you guys! I know exactly what happened there... I gave the laptop emitter a high power so that it didn't render grainy, but I've forgotten to turn it's light layer power way down for the final image. Should be a quick fix, I still have the psd and the igi.OnoSendai wrote:One thing I noticed is that the monitor on the laptop is probably a lot too bright. Re: Self Train Recreation
Really great scene, I love the reflections off the floor!

Re: Self Train Recreation
Thanks a lot guys, I learnt everything I know off this forum!
The floor is a blend map between a high exp smooth surface and a diffuse map with bump. I also applied a slight displacement map over the whole floor so that the reflections have that little waviness to them, giving the impression that the floor is not perfectly flat. The texture itself is about 6 different concrete images from CG Textures all blended together in Photoshop to give me a tileable texture about 5 x 5m.

Great work!
The CA is a bit too strong to my taste. Realistically, at this resolution, any modern camera lens would not produce such pronounced CA.
How many hours did you put into this project?

To be honest I think I'd have to agree with you, especially noticeable on the far blinds I think in hindsight... Ah well, more practice!Voytech wrote:Great work!

It took me the weekend, best part of 3 days probably, give or take... Rebus farm did the rendering in about an hour, I'm pretty happy with their service so far.
