You've got heaps of stuff with that config that you don't need (Microsoft Works?!) and it's way too expensive imho... For the price of 8 Dell Systems you can buy 12 custom systems, so you can even have 3 systems failing at once and still have better performance than if you buy from Dell! ;-) If you ...

Yeah, you don't need _any_ graphics card, it only costs money and heats unnecessary. I'm sure there are others that offer similar service as Dell but are a bit cheaper, but that's your choice - of course a good bit of the money goes into that service as well and if you are ot able to fix problems or...

hmm, a decent i7 machine for under 600€... Beware though that you need Storage + the other 1/2 PSU + Case + maybe better cooling which would mean 550€ already for "naked" Node 125€ decent SSD for System + programs (the upcoming Supertalent Ultradrive looks _really_ promising) 25€ other half of PSU ...

I was calculating rather conservatively (no special offer - 199 GBP for Q6600 + MoBo + RAM is really cheap!), no overclocking and with 8 GB RAM (since it's cheap these days) but if you like I can calculate more agressively: Phenom 9850BE: 140€ http://geizhals.at/eu/a324688.html MoBo that is able to ...

Hm, sounds interesting - at current hardware prices a setup like this might even be cheaper than a dual-socket approach! :O

Anyways: Someone here who gets more GHz than approx. 60 (conservatively calculated of course) out of 10k$ than me?

If I were building simple dumb render slaves I would not give them any HDD storage at all, I'd use that budget to get a better processor. Intel quads for me. Well, you could also use jsut small CompactFlash cards or cheap USB-Sticks to boot the nodes, I was just thinking that maybe several renders ...

Example: For each node: PSU: http://geizhals.at/eu/a378175.html 300 Watts is far too much already... ~30€ Mainboard: A good µATX AM2+ Board with 16GB DDR2 RAM support + integrated graphics ~60€ RAM: 4*2GB DDR2-800 @10-15€/GB ~80€ or more Storage: http://geizhals.at/eu/a281545.html silent, fast, big ...

Well, they just are a Dual-Xeon box with a (more or less) Unix that has a fancy interface. I wonder though how a Xeon System can be cheaper than "Xeon Systems" - kinda Zen really... I personally wouldn't pay THAT much more just for a nice (?) case + OS-Interface - but well, it's not my money so have...

Btw. @ ~4€ per GB I'm surely gonna invest a bit into those - the difference is much more noticable than with e.g. a CPU upgrade (not with rendering of course ;) ) I personally think under 5€/GB it's worth to invest in SSDs but this is a personal decision and I understand others that see HDDs tha...

Even then like in the Nehalem debate:
Every improvement is an improvement - and going OpenCL won't mean that the CPU doesn't work any more, it would just mean that you can reder on other processors as well.

Argh, I fear they will screw it up again then... ...and then (like the Linux guys) still say it's superior and you just have to learn how it works because they have found the one and only holy way how to navigate in a 3d app. Ah, it's unfair to flame even before, but still - Blender could be ...
