Okay Subpixel,
I tried changing the background environment colour and it didn't work.
But using the latest files you posted does the trick, so far so good.

I re-installed the latest SDK and max plugin ( 64bit versions ) Set up the simplest of scenes, two boxes one with and emitter material the other simple grey. 3dsmax just freezes up, and the RAM gets eaten up. Indigo studio runs fine, could it be I'm running 3dsmax Design ? System OS Windows 7 64bit,...

The latest version of 3dsmax is 2012 not 2011 
I currently use 3dsmax Design 2012 and will be moving to 2013 when release in the next couple of months.

Do Indigo proxies work in IndigoRT ? I'm basically testing the new 3dsmax/Indigo integration since I'm mainly interested in IndigoRT. Proxy's are the way to go, smaller file sizes, faster saves. With instances you still need one high res mesh in the file and a scene with 10 unique heavy tree meshes ...

Thats what I have been doing but theres still no sky, when rendered its a black background ( no sky ) and only the sun light.
Will tonemapping be interactive ?

Just tried the latest build, looks like the geometry problem has been solved.
I had a couple of scenes that were missing polies everywhere.
Wheres the environment at ? I noticed I can select a light for the sun, but theres no sky ?

How are you going to setup physical sky ? will it have its own light in the viewport ? to move around ?
On the list of things, wheres the environment ? really need the use of HDRI lighting for testing
