lampshade and SSS

Post by nikolatesla20 » Tue Mar 13, 2007 5:05 am

I've been trying to make a lampshade.

I'm using Blendigo for .07t5 Indigo

I put a bulb (a meshlight) inside a lamp, which the lamp's surface is set with:

Specular
IOR 1.0
RGB set to absorb all but dark orange, gain set to 25 or so
SSS set to RGB, to scatter oranges, gain set to 25 or so as well

I get some scattering, but I can still see the bulb inside. I then duplicated the shade mesh twice more, and sized it bigger, so I have 3 layers of shade. It worked a little better but not much.

I don't see how to get a realistic lamp shade. Even with SSS turned on, the bulb is still very visible, almost like looking thru a type of fabric, rather than like paper (which will absorb the light and scatter it very much).

attached is a picture of the lamp, and also the blend file I'm using.

you need to increase IOR! try 1.5.
But this wont work, if your lampshade doesn't have thickness! Model it as, say, 3mm... looks nice ;)

Thanks for the response Kram.

I did try IOR 1.5 before this screenshot, but then I got glass and reflections, but no light made it thru the lampshade!

The shade definitely does have thickness, I made sure of that when I modeled it.

Dumb question - how does blender's units map to Indigo units, for real world measurements?

Thanks again for the help, man. Sorry for being a newb.

Try with glossy transparency and higher SSS value.

1 BU = 1 Indigo meter ;)

Yes, mats do have reflections, naturally...
But otherwise, you don't get much better translutecy

Ok, I changed to glossy_transparent, and this is what I have now.

I have only one thickness of shade.

Screenshot of blendigo settings as well.

looks nice :D the light is a bit orangeish, how ever...
try blacklight 5000 with whitebalance E
;)
If you want to get it less transparent, you may can change SSS to uniform and a high value...
but I don't know...
I'm searching for SSS for leaves, myself...
