REQ: restore view-dependent subdivisions

Post by CTZn » Wed Feb 15, 2012 1:01 am

They have beneficied from the recent smoothing improvements and are a critical asset with handling high res displacement data.

Currently for large terrains the rendition is forcibly coarse at the ground level, and hi-res sculptures can not be treated as casual objects into a scene.

Wether the mesh is updating on demand or on camera movement, if at all is secondary to the power of the primary feature.

scratched below, I seem to have missed some improvements already !
Also, please consider changing output:
Doing subdivision level 4... | Done.

instead of

Building scene... | Done.

Also View dependent reduction (pixel & curve based) isn't working for quad meshes subdived...

Multithreaded Subdiv would speed up stuff too ;)

What is the feature status, please ?

Subdivisions are good at smoothing shapes but displacement without optimizations is extremely costly, detailed terrains are out of reach simply.

I'm not sure wether it's me missing the feature or the feature missing... ?

It's unlikely to be re-enabled before 3.2 Stable, after which it'll be given due consideration of course - it is indeed a missing feature which can be important.
