Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Wireframe Lines Coming Through
I am trying to render a metal panel (among lots of other things) made from brushed aluminum. When I run the render, I get some weird lines showing in the plane of the panel. They seem to be part of the wire frame though there are no lines at those locations. I think they are some part of the geometry as an export to Kerkythea uses the same lines to define the object. The artifacts at the bottom aren't an issue at the moment.
How do I keep those from rendering?

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Hi ieatfish - can you post the sketchup (.skp) file as a zip? I'm not sure if that's the way you're modelling or how sketchup is exporting. Indigo shouldn't render like that.
Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Hi
I have already noticed this, while rendering a simple SSS shape, something like a cube, and it seemed that when exporting to indigo, it triangulated all the faces (divided the squares in two triangles) and it made almost the same artefacts
i ll pst sme screenshot soon
I guess it is because exporting to indigo makes it triangulate all? I noticed the same thing in Kerkythea, as he says, it is the way KT divides the geometry

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
If u have noise shader on it, then take it down and give a try.

I eat fish too
. That seems to be a mesh problem. Be carefull when using smoothing tool (remember select + soften coplanar)
Instead of s moothing a 90 degree angle I use a very usefull plugin from Fredo6 called round corner (free). And only then I smooth edges. Hope I helped you.

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
I installed the Fredo6 plugin but that did not solve it. I've attached the original file. The materials still need some work but I haven't bothered too much until I fix this problem. I am using the Brushed Aluminum material from the gallery and when it is stock, it is even worse. Once I tweak it to be more realistic, the lines are a little fainter but still obvious.
I'm not sure how materials transfer themselves but the layers should be pretty self explanatory. Brass standoffs are brass, horizontal piece is opaque shiny black acrylic. Interior pieces are partially transparent black acrylic, outsides are brushed aluminum.

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Ok, that's what I've done:
- I select one single face (triple click on it).
- right clic on it, select soften smooth edges.
- Angle between normal: 20 degrees and select both:smooth normal and soften coplanar.
The Fredo6 plugin allaws you to round corners: Notice in real life obj theres is never 90º sharpened edges. You have to round them even if it's very subtil. So your renders will look better..

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
That seems to resolve the problem. Thanks!!! Does that slow down render times as there are more faces? I guess I don't quite understand what Smooth/Soften does.
edit: Nevermind, that didn't do it. I even opened a brand new sketchup drawing and made a similar sheet with similar results. I am thinking it has to do with the material. When I leave the material as a default Sketchup material, it is fine. It also works fine with the presets. But when I use the Brushed Aluminum, it causes that. I'll redownload it and see if that fixes it.
edit2: Definitely the material. I downloaded it again, imported it straight into the model, and rendered and the lines are there extremely bad.
I REALLY like that brushed aluminum texture as it looks on the Indigo model but I could never get it to look that good in mine and this problem kinda kills it for me. I'll try other metals to see if it is a metals problem.

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Okay, so I am now completely confused. It does it with just about any material besides a diffuse. I made a new drawing with a similar shape and same thing. Should I maybe reinstall sketchup?

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Did you tried what Meelis said: Go to skindigo material editor/brushed alumini/material attributes and set the bump map to none because there is actually a shader on it. That should work!
Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
I reinstalled Sketchup and the problem doesn't seem to be there or carry over to other materials. It still appears occasionally but not like it had.fenerolina wrote:Did you tried what Meelis said: Go to skindigo material editor/brushed alumini/material attributes and set the bump map to none because there is actually a shader on it. Well, when I turn off the bump, the weird lines do go away. Unfortunately, so does any sort of brushed look.

When I edit the material, the information is in the Bump section with type Shader so I don't think turning it off is the right thing to do...

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
I know but I'm not skilled in indigo shader language. I know you wont get the same but try to use this texture as a bump map,(isntead of shader choose external) /position map in the model/ accept / set it to 0.0004 and reduce exponent number until you get it. Try searching in the net other brushed metal bump maps as well and do a lot of experiments.ieatfish wrote:turning it off is the right thing to do...

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
Yeah, try to use the bump map texture instead of using a shader. I have seen this problem also in my renders when using a brushed noise shader. I think it could be an Indigo bug.
Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
I'm messing around with that bump map, thanks! If other people have made successful materials, why do they not upload them to the materials section? I know for some renderers, their materials libraries are HUGE. Is it because indigo is relatively new?

Re: Wireframe Lines Coming Through
We're running a competition this month to get more materials into the material db. I think part of the reason is that it didn't used to be that easy to upload materials to the material db. Hopefully it's easier with the new material editor!
