how do you adjust a lights intensity

Post by plums451 » Tue Nov 09, 2010 1:11 am

I assign lambert material to mesh but increasing materials incandescence & glow settings in attribute editor does not effect light intensity, it's simply on or off according to if their is any incandescence, how do you adjust a lights intensity?

Do not use Maya shaders.

Use 'Indigo shader' from Hypershade. Activate 'Material emission'. Assign it to mesh that will represent your light.

Note: Use indigo editor to control these, not Maya AE.

Yes, please do so plums.

Let me underline some parts of my answer to your PM:
I strongly recommend that you use the Indigo Editor to set values targetting at Indigo as it is focusing only on relevant attributes
The intensity is set there within the Material Emission section of the material. Check the Spectrum radio button (default is None).

Base Emission: definition of the emitted power
Emission: multiplier for the above. Acts like a filter for the light.

You can leave the default and just set Base Emission to a supercolor (RGB values above 1).
for a finer emission control and look it is best to plug a spectrumNode (in HyperShade > Utilities) into the Base Emission (Ambient Color), modulated (masked) by a texture in Emission (Incandescence) if you want
I didn't mention the Glow attribute. The effect in Indigo closest to Maya Glow is the aperture diffraction of the camera.

Now, the reciprocal of the emitted power is the film sensibility:

When setting light powers, the tonemapping (in: Camera Indigo Editor > Tonemapping) should be changed to linear with the default settings, to start with. The default aperture and exposure time from Maya cameras is fine also, and the render should then give a good idea of the required light powers.

That said, it is right to use lambert and phong materials. Just scan them through the Indigo Editor, even for indigoShader because it's Attribute Editor UI needs a revision :).

The Indigo Editor is crucial today in integrating the exporter into Maya, sometimes even providing explicit informations.

MtI will be aimed at a wider integration, wich means that at some point using the Indigo Editor may become an option.

I mean to ask users on the future orientations they want for MtI.

changed sky/sun to none
in Material Emission I
checked spectrum radio button
& tried different settings for
Base Emission & Emission
but always the light intensity is the same
what am i doing wrong here

In Indigo use Camera tonemapping. If you are using Reinhard, it will just automatically adjust.

Hi plums.
I want multiple light source at different intensity
They will be multiple emissive shaders, then. Choosing the layer of emission is done from the Indigo Editor, down the material emission section. You can then tweak intensities within Indigo.

Sorry about the frustration caused by the lack of documentation. It is not possible to create one before MtI gets formed. We are coming closer, also if Windows 7 allows me I'll retrieve my codecs and post some videos.

I agree that the topic of lighting needs clarifications.

Plums,

I am going to change something now in the material emission section of the Indigo Editor, then I'll post a video to introduce you to the how.
