Need help converting big 3DS file to SKP

Post by ErichBoehm » Mon Dec 17, 2018 3:56 pm

Hello all,

So, I downloaded a rather large 3D model of the city of NYC (It is around 1/3 the buildings on Manhatten) from the city's website. I managed to convert it to 3Ds from a 3DM file, and then somehow imported the 122 mb file in Sketchup on my Macbook Air. Importing into Sketchup alone took several hours. One last thing to do, and that was to bump it up in size so to make rendering more practical. This is where I hit a snag. I have been looking at the spinning wheel for the last hour or so and I doubt it is going to go away. So, this is where you wonderful folks come in. I am looking for someone with a computer that can move mountains that might be able to convert this beast to a usable Sketchup file at a good with a little bit of upscaling. Here is the link to the file for anyone who is brave enough! This thing is massive. Thank you for your help!

Did you try to convert it via blender?
Cheers, David

Yeah you probably have to import the 3ds file in something like Blender, scale it all up and re-export into SKP. SketchUp is horrible for handling large amounts of 3D data.

Just tried to open that model(s) in C4D; editor window freezes. Hundrets of single objects. 3dsmax opens it, but export freezes here on my old iMac at home too.
There are no textures embedded...
Cheers, David

Hey Ne0.

the issue with your file is that is is made out of ~60k objects, this cripples most 3D Viewports.
I merged the houses into a single mesh, that should help performance a LOT!

Hello,

Thank you so much for your help! The file is much smaller as well, which should help. Was it created on a Mac by some chance? I have a Mac, and I am unable to open the file. I can see it in Finder, but when I try to open it up in Sketchup, it's not there. I assume that is because it was not created on a Mac, but I could be wrong. Any ideas? Thanks again!

its done on a PC. You can't see the 3ds file? I can convert to OBJ if that helps, here you go (don't forget to unzip):
