Post by madcoo » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:36 pm

Hi!

I know it's not perfect at all, so please comment!

Modelled with Sketchup 7.
Render time : over 17 hours.

Thanks!

I like the space, for the matter I would not have put the table in the middle but in the background rather.

It's more a comment than a critic :)

I also thought about putting a carpet underneath the table, so it doesn't look so isolated...

You should change your signature to 'SketchUp user'. Pretty nice rendering. I'm not a huge fan of how the furniture and camera are arranged. The table also looks quite oversized but that's just an opinion. Overall, well done!

Hi Mad!
I see you paid a good attention to materials, but the overall sensation I feel is that the room is kinda empty. There are only 2/3 pieces of furniture in a really huge space: if I'd be you, I would try to rearrange the chair, add a couch, add some IKEA expedits, resize the table and fill it with dishes and stuff. To sum up: add objects! Do you have some time to spend on this? I've got the feeling it will be worth it.

Thanks for your comments, I agree with all you said!

- table looks big
- not enough furniture

I was actually "testing" my speed in terms of modelling and texturing - took me roughly 15 hours.

It's not just furniture but all the other "stuff" we all usually have in our living spaces.
Look at Pibuz's thread called "Green Living". It's a WIP that develops over several days (weeks ?) It's very educational!

You'll find plants, drinking classes, dishes, a cereal box, books etc. It looks line someone lives there and has just briefly left and may be back any moment. It sucks you in and somewhat tells a story. You start to imagine yourself living there!

Very nice start though. Nice materials!

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely keep working on making my scenes more "lively"!!!
:D

Regarding the modelling speed, does this sound "slow" to you ?
(15 hours for this scene)

@ headroom:
I'VE BEEN POINTED AS A REFERENCE! THAT IS SUCH AN HONOUR FOR ME!!!!
Thank you very much! That really flatters me a lot. :D :D :D
The final image is now being rendered at borgleader's, don't know about the timinig: I don't want to put any pressure on him, he's doing me a big favour.

@madcoo:
I really don't understand such huge timing, Mad, indeed..
Modeling is something I do in 2/3 hours, for simple interior scenes like this one. Then I browse the internet and download some good models to "fill the space", sometimes the bigger part is taken by the adjustments for the downloaded objects (reversing faces, resizing, filling missing geometry, smoothing edges,....).
I suggest you: don't spend so much time in modeling ALL OF YOUR OBJECTS. In the warehouse you will find some trash, it's true, but some good models too. Try looking for Designer Tiago's collection: it's rich in nice and modern furniture, you will like that. AND YOU WILL SPARE TIME!
The modeling part for the furniture takes place when you have some very particular conditions: we architects call it "design criticities". In the "green living" scene I only modeled the kitchen (only the visible part, obviously) and the floating bookshelf, that's all.
A bigger part is given to deciding the positions of the lights, their powers and colours, and adjusting camera and materials.

Thanks for these detailed pieces of information Pibuz!

Indeed maybe it's because I'm a beginner in SU, and also because I tend to go too much into detail, that I "waste" so much time...
For example I find "bevelling" in SU very time-consuming, compared with Blender.

In SU if you want to bevel you have to draw a triangle on the edges, use the "follow me" tool...
It can be ok for a single surface, but when you want to bevel connected faces it becomes a real hassle (I think).

Well... another time-consuming thing is probably that I never draw on a piece of paper what I'm going to do - for now I have no "commercial" project, so I just start from scratch and I model directly in SU.
I know that's something I probably won't do with commercial projects...

Thanks for the advice, as this is all very precious to me, and I appreciate the fact that a proper "professional" can help a rookie like me !

@madcoo

About bevelling edges in SU.

http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtop ... 0485&f=180

That's an absolutely great plugin - I can't work without it anymore :)
Just remember to read the tutorial, install dependencies etc.
And it's free :D

Nice renders btw .

... just a quick post, to say THANKS to Pibuz : I'm working on another room, and I've been using SU's Warehouse a lot !!!
It makes such a difference !!!
:D

I'll post my new work as soon as it's done.

One more thing:
I'm looking for some "pictured" references about luminous flux and intensity, if anyone's got a good link...
