max resolution

Post by carbon » Fri Dec 12, 2008 6:00 am

Hi, I am trying to determine the biggest possible render resolution, i am testing it on material preview scene and both 1.1.14 and 1.1.15 keeps crashing on any resolution higher than ~2000, i can't believe that this resolution is final.. i got this:

Code: Select all

inished initialisation

some specs: MBPro, MacOSX 10.5.5, 4gb ram, wine-1.0
(EDIT: don't you think i am trying to render such image on mbpro, just testing, final render will go to macpro..)

does anyone have any experience with high resolution images?
Or Ono, is indigo limited in resolution?

i'd like to render something ~5000px

thanks. c

I thought the max render resolution was 10 000x10 000 or something :?

the maximum resolution should only be limited by the amount of your ram.

I have rendered up to 7200 x 5400 on earlier versions of indigo, with similar specs to you (mac osx 10.4, wine, 4 gb ram) but I have also found that these days the newest versions have a lower res limit before they crash. that's even when using the console mode.

above about 6400 x 4800 it crashes just after finishing building all the kd trees. at 6000 x 4500 the render starts fine, then crashes when it reaches the display period (despite being in console mode not needing display anything).

the 64 bit versions should be able to handle much larger images, but those won't work with wine yet.

i've tried to set super_sample_factor to 1 and i doubled the resolution, that means: 2800x2800px
i was watching memory usage during indigo startup, wine took about 600 during rendering and <1100mb when saving image, any higher load caused crash
it is possibly wine issue, what you think..

Also set the <super_sample_factor> to 1 for larger images (if you didn't already).

[edit]
Ok, you did, oh well.. 8)

Could the diffraction post effect have an impact on that issue ? I think it's enabled by default... I'm not sure but some scene settings could possibly lead to less memory consumption (or whatever positive change they could induce). But well that's all I can tell, not a rez killer myself.

Well sorry for double posting but for instance, if I launch the test scene "adaptative_diplacement_shader.igs", there is a sudden memory jump of 150 extra Mo when diffraction post filter is applied, back and forth, and the image is only 800x600...

Yep, diffraction uses quite a bit of memory. The amount is related to resolution, of course.

i installed ubuntu 64bit yesterday.. i was able to render 4800x4800, super sample 2, no difraction, with 4gb ram and swap file < 200mb :) so it is wine issue

FakeShamus: i recomend you to do the same :)
all: thanks for replies

no, its just a 32 bit issue...

yeah I was gonna say, it's a 32 vs 64 bit issue. but I definitely had more success with higher resolutions with earlier versions of indigo, so I'm not convinced it doesn't still have something to do with added features or different code in the latest versions.

carbon, I'd be curious to know how you did the ubuntu installation. there seem to be different approaches, all with varying success. can you point me to what worked for you? thanks

fused: indigo crashed every time when using ~1.1gb of memory on wine.. so i still think it is wine issue

FakeShamus:
1. downloaded and burned Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop 64bit (ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso)
2. attached blank drive, booted cd, installed ubuntu on blank drive, booted ubuntu, i didn't want to mess osx, so i removed all other drives
3. installed wxWidgets following this manual
4. downloaded indigo 1.1.15 64bit for linux and run
:)

also set all diffraction to false, to save memory
