yes, as psor says, try appling object transformation, because it you have unequal scaling for X, Y, Z on the object, the normals could be wrong.

Win: Sometimes the normal recalculator gets stuff wrong and flips half the normals the wrong way. did you do CTRL-N or did you do it manualy?

check for any inside or overlapping faces. inside faces play hell with normals and sometimes are overlooked. then check for any missing faces anywhere on the mesh, then recalculate normals. post the .blend file of just the model if you want me to take a look.

With glass is's looks very good.
If one normal outward and next negative then You will have as shown above.
Check "Your" normals :0).

It's odd... This doesn't occur in Blender internal, or Yafray, just Indigo :\

OK. I'm assuming that your sofa/couch/settee is a subsurfaced model. If I'm right, you need to apply the subsurfacing before you export the .xml. If I'm wrong then I'll just shut up :? :wink:

Maybe you could share just a cushion so we can check geometries using various apps ? obj prefered, 3ds is ok too.
