[REQ] Matte Material
Like in 3DSMax. This material can cast and receive shadows but otherwise it doesn't interact with the scene in any way. This could make easy to integrate objects in HDR/EXR Environment or photographs.

Ure POV post is a bit clearer as environment-maps are for stuff which is far away ("environment") from your object ("car"). But your street isn't far away as the car touches it - logicaly you should model the street as object and not as environment - as i understood this
But YES, it would be elegant to just get the shadow on a "alpha" object for this case of scene - perhaps in the near or far future it could be a indigo feature

I don't think it's a big "trick" to specify wether a material prints into alpha or not, it doesnt shift unbiasedness whatsoever but is darn usefull as far as compositing goes + it's very used in profesional environment where unbiased is not an option anyway (for cast say).
