I like the first silk shot...the second looks more like latex or porcelain

I'm fancy giving velvet a try.

Theorically Oren-Nayar + extra-low-ior phong should do... I'd add bump only when the surface looks ok.

the strange (well, maybe not THAT strange^^) thing is, that you can't find any good reference shots, with a closeup of the structure. Only lots of shots from things, made of velvet or partly with velvet.... Or women who lack of velvet or anything that'd come close to it

Not easy to make a bump for velvet, I guess...

All I know is that the reflections of velvet have a really strange fall-off due to the structure of the fabric, with very sharp transitions from one colour to another and back depending on the angle...

almost seems as if it turns white or 'dusty' as the viewing angle gets perpendicular to the normal of the material... brighter too almost. it sometimes seems to have a weird glow....

gotta do some tests!

Wich means: anisotropic. That's why the effect is so hard to catch, and bump mapping strictly necessary.

Velvet is silk, basically, isn't it ? I have a synthetical sample in front of me, it's quite old and it appears that the threads are sewed on a rather specular surface (a synth fabric). This substrate can be also determinant for the final appearence...

Just for the pleasure of the eyes, if I may:

Because BbB you are close to the closest approximation of velvet possible, I think. Congrats from me.
