Maybe you could lower max depth in this case, to shorten iterations... A dimmer gray would do anyway, even 50% under sun light. Impressive demonstration !

You don't need to load the larg meshes into blender - create a dummy object yourself that will represent the large mesh, then:
1. export
2. edit the .igs by hand
3. render

if you notice the centering is off, then you'll have to adjust the center of your dummy object and do steps 1 - 3 again.

Just a P4 3.2ghz an 1gb ram, rendered for ~12h :)

Cindigo has such a dummy object integrated, where you can specify the path to an external object, the bounding box size and the center (wich will be drawn in the editor), maybe its wort implementing sth in blendigo/mti/maxigo?

Could be done fairly easy with a custom locator for MtI, but currently no support for "external" objects, although instancing of real objects is there.

Then it's probably my materials making it slow.

How do you set path tracing ? Is that when MLT, Hybrid and Bidir are off ?

Maya has a reference system wich allows to have geometries offline, but you need to load the mesh once anyway I think. That allows to modify single object without editing the main scene. External meshes in MtI could be as easy as setting a full path instead of a mesh name into instancing locators, as Doug said.

Yes, though I think BiDir can be on. That just affects how the path tracing/MLT works.

MLT on/off chooses between path tracing and MLT.
Hybrid on/off chooses between (path/MLT, whatever you chose) and a path/MLT mixture.
Bidir on/off just changes the behavior of the above-mentioned modes.

Thank you ! See, I had fixed this locally long time ago but since, MtI is always forcing MLT on, whatever the checkbox state could be... I was sure we were missing something there !

Well, turns out I CAN load the xyzrgb dragon.

Heres another one that I put together quickly, nothing fancy, just to prove I could do it :D . 26,562 dragons, and 191.7 Billion polygons. My Blender cannot handle any more. It almost took longer to export than it did to render.
