to increase the materials(competition)

Post by filippo » Fri Sep 07, 2007 6:13 am

To increase the availability of materials, could not do a competition when do all the consumers propose their material?
so the bookstore of materials would increase of number and quality...
thing done think of it?

This is a great idea! :D

The trouble is finding someone who has the time to organize the competition...

Maybe each material competition could run for two weeks and would have a specific theme. I think the themes should include mainly real-world materials that Indigo noobs might struggle with. For example,

Suggested Material Contest Themes
Vegetation
Building Materials (wood, brick, steel, etc.)
Metallic (car paints, brushed metal, etc.)
Fabrics
SSS (wax, marble, plastics)
Weathered Materials

A relatively easy way to organize the contest would be to start a new forum called Material Competitions and then create a new thread for each contest and theme.
Each entry could consist of 3 items:
1) Material settings and/or IGM file with texture maps.
2) Render of a scene using the material
3) Render using a standard material preview scene

As an incentive to post materials, Ono could set up a poll on the front page after the contest is over and we could vote for the best material.

Please post if you are interested in this or have other suggestions.

Vegetation: Dr. Bouvier Leduc wins!
Metallic: pure nk not allowed, I s'ppose? Or do you especially mean the texture effects (as fir brushed metal)?

Great Idea, indeed :D

I'm not sure about that, but I think, Ono also isn't the best idea as an organizer.... he should concentrate on his next release^^ (He needs to decide himself, though^^)

1 crit: it's 3Ds format... it's ok, but blenders 3ds import sucks... I'll try to import, but actually, .obj would be better...

Any files to be used would need to be available in formats everyone can use. I would suggest that indigo's own format be made available at least. Then it can be used as an include in the scene file.
