that's 'cause you use reinhard tonemapping... (reinhard auto exposures your pic as good as possible, it tries to avoid pure black and pure white pixels)

two ways to get arround that:
1) make your emitter weaker (don't turn it completely off, but make it weaker)
2) use linear tonemapping - a bit harder to use than reinhard, but as long as you export the igi and you can post edit the tonemapping in violet, you shouldn't have troubles with that ;)

its an tonemapping issue!

Black Body is sooooo bright that much more bright could not go!
So use efficiacy_scale for your meshlights, but finding the right values is a try & error work.

You also could try to reduce your Black_body gain value massively!

Smartden hit the nail on the head.

Just increase your Env map gain. by 10x or more :)

Try both, emitters and EXR. With emitter you can get good shadows and EXR give you nice revlections

I guess its better with only emitters. BUT (and its a big but) only if you add some other low power emitters (perhaps 2) around the model, i mean like long rectangular boxes so that you dont get 2 funky shadows. that way, the scene will still be bright, but you will still see the headlamp thing.

-OR-
you could go for a nice smokey.foggy effect and put the whole thing in a giant SSS cube and see the headlamp from the model illuminate a cone of light, that'd be pretty kewl 8)

mind uploading the blend file? id like to take a closer look at that thing, looks interesting :P
