Dual GPU

Is anyone using this setup?

My goal is to use my older V4900 for display/viewport, second for rendering/simulations. I want to use firepro GPUS, not radeon.

Could you tell me is it worth doing it? Cause, I don't want to spend money just for nothing, if you know what I mean.

The cpu itself suits me very well, co complains.

Don't know about the drivers conflict. I checked at AMD website, all models V4900, V5900, W5000 are supported by the newest 15.201.2401 drivers. In my opinion, it should work with no problems.

Another thing. Which one would you suggest? W5000 or V5900 gpu? W5000 is newer, but mid-end, V5900 older, but higher-end.

Or should I forget firepro and get radeon?

A FirePro like the one you have is great for CAD and display. However a higher 300 series or Fury card will most likely blow a little W5000 FirePro away in terms of OpenCL performance. One of the developers has a W5000, but it's no match even for my 4 year old HD 7970 in Indigo 4.

But what about the drivers? I read that some people managed to get firepro and radeon work together. Need to install radeon drivers first, then fiepro. Something like that.

Is anyone of you are using more than one GPU? (Except mac pro

)

I've found the W5000 to be a great little card, we got one from AMD some years ago and I'm always testing with it

So if you use this as a display GPU for your 3d modelling / CAD software, with another high end GPU like Oscar suggested, it would surely work very well (and it can even help out a bit with rendering too).

Could someone share their knowledge about dual GPU configurations?

I know there are some people here using more than one GPU in their systems.

What are the insights? Maybe dual radeons/geforce is enough?

I'm not sure what you mean with "enough", one can never have enough processing power

Certainly dual GTX 970 or R9 390 (with 8GB memory) would be awesome for rendering right now, probably the most rendering power you can put in a normal computer for a given amount of money.

I run my Radeon HD 7970 externally via a slightly modded AKITIO PCIe unit into my MBP. It works flawlessly and combines the best of two worlds - mobility and rendering power.

I am sure that could work, however those cheap solutions often have a very crippled transfer speed with PCI Express x1 or x4 instead of x16. Although I'm not sure that matters that much for GPU computing, it's more of a bottleneck when it comes to games and such.
