I was out for few months (i just had 3.6 version ;)). I'm back ant what is happening? XD

I need to stop playing with Chaotica ;) and keep the eye on events now on :)

Keep in mind that these are mid-range GPUs, and higher end GPUs can perform much better.
Chaotica
so you can probably reach some really ridiculous speeds with high-end GPUs, instead of the mid-range ones used in this test system.
Someone please give Glaresome high end cards! :lol:

Cards that are made for GPU computing, NOT cards made for OpenGL Visualization in CAD software!
People mix that up a lot!!!

The biggest benefit for such GPU Compute Cards is faster double precision performance that is restricted for consumer cards.
It will be interesting how much the OpenCL Indigo version uses such Double Precision, and how important it will be for performance!

I actually rather suggest to invest in multiple low power consumer Cards, then investing 10x the money for Pro Cards that only deliver some negligible speed up!

BTW: for Chaotica, in the linked Blogpost you see that the integrated GPU of the intel 4770k performed over twice as fast (!!!) as the CPU for itself!

As for gpus. I don't really know which ones are realted to pure gpu processing. I thought Teslas were meant to do this...

So far i've seen only renderers that benefit from single presision performance.
High end gaming cards have more cuda cores than pro cards = they are faster in single presision than pro cards. (at least NVidia gpu's)
Pro GPU's have more memory though. So it's either more memory or faster speeds. Maybe it will change with next gen...

Thanks for the kind words about Chaotica guys, and please keep in mind I have great support from the other GlareGuys on it :)


I'd like to keep a regular flow of information about the GPU stuff, including test images and hopefully soon animations :) As suvakas suggested, that's a great avenue for Indigo-exploring with all the extra performance.

One more thing: even with mid-range GPUs the speedup on simple scenes is really enormous, far beyond 10x. For example with just those two midrange GPUs I sometimes see in excess of 200m samples per second, which approaches realtime path tracing speeds, and the slowest part of rendering becomes reading the data back from GPU at 60FPS or whatever. This means that with an OpenGL viewport to avoid copying that data around, you should be able to get really snappy in-editor previews like other pure GPU render engines. It will converge to Indigo Renderer's quality, however ;)

Thanks for introducing me to chaotica, I just purchased it :). Is there a build with openCL available? I have 2 7970 ghz editions and they are no slouches with opencl. Id also love to try out indigo's pure gpu renderer... ;)

What about AMD APU series processors? Any info about their OpenCL benchmarks in Indigo?
