GPU Acceleration: GTX 780 Ti or R9 290x

Post by ararch » Sun Jan 26, 2014 6:48 am

Dear,

I want to buy a graphic card mainly for rendering with Indigo. My current processor is a I7-4770K and want to combine it for CPU+GPU rendering to speed up things. My budget is in the range of 700 euro. I am thinking of buying the GTX 780 Ti gaming addition for higher clock rates or the R9 290x. What would you advise?

Thanks for posting. Dennis

For Indigo rendering: that GPU is way too powerful a match for the CPU, also GPU rendering only works for certain render types, rather get something like a 660 ti (or AMD alternative, which performs much better using the faster OpenCL language) and use the left-over money towards a slave rendering machine (and network equipment).

Trust me, I made the mistake, the above is my best advice, learn from it.

I can second juju here, check how your actual GPU performs, if it ever reaches 100% utilization in your renderings!

If it does, then such scenes would benefit from a GPU upgrade, but as juju mentioned, the can quickly outperform the CPU and simply idle a good part of their performance...

The devs told that some GPU improvements will come: http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... 97#p125797

I would strongly suggest you to wait until these updates are in, then a upgrade would be a good idea.

For everybody with GPU questions its a good idea to scroll down the forum a little and read in the previous GPU threads... I feel like explaining the same stuff for the 1001 time -.-'

However, while these points are accurate, I would suggest getting one under a specific circumstance. I purchased an R9 290, and in doing I can still multitask and do whatever I want video intensive wise, especially watch videos (I don't have cable), in that situation it's pretty good. But otherwise, you should wait.
