New features in dev - arch glass and new exit portals
Hi All,
Now that 3.6 is out, it's time to show some of the new stuff we have been working on
The bread and butter of most Indigo users is arch-viz, and a lot of arch-viz consists of sunlight and glass. So we have two new features that should make for some massive improvements for such scenes.
The first is arch glass. Arch glass will be an option for specular materials. It uses some trickery to approximate the flow of light through thin glass. Although it is an approximation, it should be a highly accurate one, and should result in much faster rendering convergence.
Indigo arch glass correctly handles multiple reflections, as well as absorption in the glass. It's as easy to use as ticking a checkbox on the specular material settings.
The second new feature is a change to the way exit portals work - you will now be able to see through them, e.g. you can still use them in a window even if the outside of a room should be visible as well. You can even use them for exterior shots looking into a building.
In this test, we are looking into a room with glass on the window. The cactus is a reflection in the window.
Old: (50 samples / pixel) New render with arch glass and new exit portals: (50 samples / pixel)
This test uses an exit portal on the window.
As you can see, the outside is now visible. Also the reflection of the sunlight on the chrome sphere cleans up much faster.

Perfect ! We really need it !
ArchiCAD 14, Cinema 4D r13, IndigoRender, VrayforC4D

Great stuff
I'm a little confused by the exit portal- If it's *on* the window, how is the rest of the scene illuminated?

The archviz here seems intrigued by the new stuff and approves.

Re: New features in dev - arch glass and new exit portals
Can it only be used for flat glass?
Re: New features in dev - arch glass and new exit portals
Should work for slightly curved glass as well, like car glassOscar J wrote:Can it only be used for flat glass?
It just won't work for highly curved and complicated glass like headlights, drinking glasses etc..
Re: New features in dev - arch glass and new exit portals
It's more of a sampling hint than an exit portal in that respect.Godzilla wrote:Great stuff

Ah I see.
A feature suggestion (I thought I'd say something here since it's not really thread-worthy):
If there were a Hex value field in addition to HSV and RGB in the Indigo color picker, it would be very helpful.

..don't know if it's possible (but we're talking about new impossible things, so... ) but it would be nice to have invisible objects not to be rendered in reflections too..

I know a very easy way: delete the objects in question
The benefit of how it is now is that you can cut the back wall of a room (for example) and still have it rendered in reflective surfaces inside of the room.
What benefit would making the object completely invisible have over just not having it in the scene at all?
