metamaterials / negative index of refraction

Post by oodmb » Sat Jan 20, 2007 5:43 pm

hey, while indigo 7 is still in its betta stages, i was wondering if you could add the ability to put in a negative refraction? please? i know this might sound stupid, but currently there has been lots of talk about metamaterials and there effect, and i think it would be realy cool to be able to simulate its effect in a renderer. i have no idea how hard it would be to allow it, if its just dissabling a block on negative refraction indexes, or adding a whole new code, but whatever it is, it would be realy cool, and might turn out to be usefull, like for hiding part of an object with a cloth, but it being visible from the other side of the cloth and cool stuff like that.

I suspect the relevant equations might blow up if I tried to do this :)

I've never heard about something like MetaMats...
(Before, I saw this thread ;))
Can anyone post example pics?

I have a fix for you sir.

Just embed entire world in a big cube with low precedence and IOR 10

Then you go ahead and place other items with lower refraction in the world.

In practice (if Ono did his homework) it will behave like "negative" index of refraction

Someone said, that something would go wrong if camera was into a medium, is this confirmed ?

I was into a medium once. She said I would meet a switft and cruel death.

(Seriously. I think refraction code is wrong when light leaves a medium)

i think the problem with putting the whole world inside a medium of ten is that the camera's lense still has an ior relitive to air, thus the medium would look like any other with an index of 10, and be reflective.
real metamaterials are in early development stages and thus any picture you find will be a fraud. currently they only work for light outside of the visible spectrum. there is some stuff about them on the MIT website. maybe in 20 years they will become a reality, and if indigo is still around by then, in order to stay unbiased, it will have to simulate them

Yeh, I've just checked ... conventional fresnel equations would go a big fat BOOM

A thin lens "model" means its actually not a lens in there.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Model, models, or modeling may refer to: a pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept.

So i am not pwned. Thank you

well since the whole idea behind 3d modelling is to create models then everything were doing is fake, right? damn. weve been living a lie.
what is a 3d model if nothing more than an abstract representation of digital information? of course computer graphics are "fake".
now whether or not they represent the physical world in a "realistic" manner is a different story.
