How many years have you been modeling for?

Is there a plugin to explode a model or did you do that by hand?
Thanks,

I know your question didn't necessitate such a long response, but I was feeling nostalgic looking back through all these things to find a date, so I figured why not share? :wink:

Started in Sketchup in June 08, moved on to Blender in Octoberish 08.. Discovered Indigo in Feb 09, I started getting seriously into modeling sometime in Feb-June 09, started transitioning to Max in Feb-Apr 2010, and here we are. 2d work is another story completely, though :)

Fun timeline:

First Sketchup model
Just turned 13, didn't think I'd be doing much more modeling.. I just downloaded sketchup for the hell of it.

Last Sketchup model
I think I realized that sketchup's tool set was definitely not geared towards the easy creation of curved surfaces.

First Blender project
My age showed through my excessive use of smileys

First Indigo renders
Oh man I asked some dumb questions in the help forum to try and get Blendigo running, haha.

Last Blender project
I think some people around here remember this one

First 3ds Max project
(that I posted online, at least)

and that shotgun would probably be the latest semi-completed project. I'm hoping to get around to doing a character image involving it at some point, after I finish what I'm working on at the moment.

@ Cotty

No I just moved them apart in a hurry :)

The Highrise Apartment project is still one of the slickest interior shots ;)

How do you like Max? I've been poking around with it, but always end up going back to Blender for the speed of modeling and because Blendigo is so damn good.

Thanks tom :)

I like Max more than I liked 2.49, but I'm not sure about 2.5x because I haven't tried the new versions. I think Max modeling can be just as fast as Blender once one becomes accustomed to the interface and workflows. A big reason I had for switching was that Max seemed to be much more stable and reliable than 2.49, which it has since proved to be. I'd have to say that the main reason was just my desire to use an 'industry standard' program, as it would open up more doors in the future.

Maxigo in it's current state is unstable in conjunction with 2012, but Suvakas has promised that the 'real' C++ exporter plugin is on it's way (which I am anxiously awaiting). At the end of the day though, if you are happy with Blender, then stick I'd with it. I'm actually planning to start transitioning to Maya at some point in the future, as it's so widely used in the Film VFX industry (Which I hope to work in someday).

How do you afford all these $8000 programs?

If you're a student, you can grab pretty much any Autodesk program for free from their website.

Godzilla: I've been using 2.5 for a few months now, once Blendigo got stable enough before Indigo 3.0 came out. You should give it a go, it's a lot more integrated and intuitive than 2.49 in a lot of respects! The only thing I use 2.49 for is importing DXFs nowadays... That said, I'm looking forward to the new Maxigo for 2012 so that I can maybe get into Max more! It IS the de facto industry standard, so I guess you gotta embrace the devil at some point ;)

Well they're not all $8000. but I kinda agree. How does everyone have 3DS Max or Cinema 4D, etc? Me I'm either using fully licensed and registered progs like Pshop or free to use programs like Blender. Student licences?....

Working in that business and doing 3D stuff for living as a freelancer you end up with some extra earned money that you need to spend for such stuff.
The 8000$ don't end up with -8000$ on your bank account. You get the tax back of 19% in germany and also this "spend for business" reduces your actual taxes you have to pay... so its way cheaper then it looks like... but expensive anyway...
I still aim to switch to blender at some point!

@Neo

As others have said, student licenses

@ Tom

I may start up in Blender again for Indigo exporting purposes, after I transition to Maya. I've heard about all the great new improvements like camera tracking, smoke simulation, etc. It's really coming along nice.

@Doug

Pics or it didn't happen :wink:
