Ando Azuma Row House - CTZn

Post by CTZn » Tue Jan 04, 2011 9:44 am

I'm starting a wip based on Ando Azuma Row House, skp file provided by Ronen Bekerman to its newsletter subscribees (form on the right). Exportd to obj from SU8 (just installed), tweaked 2 UVs and plugged bumps, 1h rendering (MLT Bidir GlassAcc).

All openings have glass and portals, the top one only a portal.

Next I'm going micro-poly, and then will grow stuff around and do props eventually.

ps the image is not gamma corrected

I think now is too dark and view is too "sharp" Its good to setup all in grey render. This is good project and I think will be good affter a few changes :)

Yes it is dark, textures and colour have a gamma of 1, this was a test. Do you mean setting lights on a 50% gray "clay" render ?

Another render with gamma 2.2, still 1h.

If I want to use displacement on the walls I may have to redo them, I'm not sure I will. But on the other hand I can't live with these straight edges and the triangulated geometry I've got in Maya is a no go with meshes fun.

Closer to the expected tones, the second image was me messing with gamma again.

I'm still wandering around the scene, and I'll test various things for having nothing precise in mind atm.

Nice perspective CTZn!

One thing I have problems with Indigo atm is to get such shots lit up correctly.
For such a sun situation the shadow areas are way to dark, and even with paying around
on tonemapping it can't be lit up without getting some overburn on the bright parts...
This isn't the way I expect it to look like :/

Maybe there are camera settings important to tweak this before exporting that I haven't played around with yet...
I'm quite a n00b with real-world cameras -.-'

There are no customisable curves in Indigo, one must post-prod the render. Raising low levels is always at the cost of contrast, I liked the contrasty look, looks like a photograph in an old magazine :D

If you can figure out how camera responses curves are coded then you can make your owns, with 3 custom curves you should be about set (low, medium and strong boost).

The linked image is linear tonemapping with aggressive curve correction in GIMP. Next I'll give a try at the Picturenaut way.

I'm starting to have some ideas with this scene...

PS: the shot from above is suggested by the author ;)

A raw output for completeness, linear+boosted sky layer, compensated by a lower temperature.

Boosting the "ambient Light" with the sky layer seem to be a quite smart way out ;)
This is maybe also a good starting point to modify some EnvMaps that let you run into this issue too...

Post pro in a external App is always possible, but I was looking into a way to optimize the indigo workflow.

A blocky test. So I'm aiming at a pleasant and joyfull living place, with plants and probably some sparkling water.

I replaced the texture with my owns to get custom colors.

Thanks Etienne, it's awesome !

Thanks, I lack a control LCD.

I'm no architect nor photographer by far, please don't be affraid to give C&C as I'm posting progresses. If you think that I'm giving too many of them here's your chance ;)

I am pretty sure that I will modify the building in order to give access to the two terraces. I'm planning a dual design at least, the simmetry goes in that direction but perhaps the living will be of a greater importance in the final design.

Updates soon.
