EdgeSplit

Post by crsrma » Wed Jan 10, 2007 9:43 am

Has anyone checked out the new EdgeSplit modifier in the Blender 2.43 RC1 build?

It's a great alternative to Auto Smooth, for rendering in Indigo.

I was just so delighted it worked for this that I had to mention. :)

An angle value of around 60 works great for low poly stuff. I love that it's a modifier too - it's almost completely non-destructible.

I don't understand the purpose of that new feature (even after reading the explanation on blender's site). Could you explain with simple word please ?

A simple example would be a corner where walls meet. If you just apply smooth-shading to the whole room it will look very undefined in your render, especially in those corners where faces meet - they would look like they melt together instead of creating a corner.

Also, if you were to simply use flat-shading, smoother things (like arches) would look very blocky.

This feature cuts up your mesh automatically, so that those over-smooth areas don't show up. How it does this happens to be great for exporting.

Thanks for pointing this out. I should really read the release notes.
