Does this renderer use hardware (GPU) or software (CPU)

Blender Game Engine Hardware

If this is Hardware I will switch right now

Hate my Geforce 8800 is doing nothing.

CPU. Indigo doesn't take any advantage of GPU, mostly because of graphic-cards not being optimized for double-precision, AFAIK...

Why don't you just try it?

Indigo isn't made to be super-fast, but rather to be super-realistic.

Indigo only uses CPU (hence all the SSE, SS2,SSE3 threads around).

On indigo's defense though I will state you are comparing it to at least 2 biased render engines (Blender Internal and Yafray).

It does have a 64 Bit version that's great.

Is it multithreadded?
