Tire Rubber

Post by Lord of the Rings Junkie » Tue Aug 12, 2008 5:55 pm

Does anyone have a good suggestion on what sort of SSS settings to use for black rubber? (Like you might see on car tires or toilet plungers.)

I already know the color should be very dark (0.1, 0.1, 0.1), I just need to figure out what SSS values would be realistic.

Yes amazing images from zuani ! But if he had used sss that would have been noticeable on fine features at least :? Vulcanised natural rubber is pretty opaque, in biased terms the scattering radius could even be under 1mm.

Not a MALP, but it's sci-fi related. ;) 'Plunger' should be a big hint. :)

I honestly have no idea what these SSS values mean, I've only ever used them before to get a foggy room... Could someone point me to a crash course on SSS? I looked in the manual, but it wasn't very clear to me. Perhaps I will give Zuani a PM. I just want it to look a LITTLE bit softer than that tire rubber.

Unfortiunately, there really isn't a materia;l guide. The indigo manual mainly covers the xml, but that isnt useful for people who use the ui...

Looking through Zuani's thread I found a screenie that seems to indicate that his tire material is just a low exponent phong with no SSS at all.

I think I'll tell you what I need this for now...
