Is that alright ?

Post by Gwenouille » Wed Jun 25, 2008 9:36 am

Hi guys !

I've tried to produce a material for the Database, and i thought that a concrete texture would be a good thing to do, especially because i could use displacement mapping...

So i turned to these pictures from BbB:
http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/fo ... php?t=2641 to create that material:

Is that alright to use BbBs textures ?
BbB are you ok with that ?

If you think this is not right, i'll erase the texture from my disc, I was just seing it as an exercise.
Otherwise, I'd be glad to upload it ...

What do you think ?

Only BbB can answer this, but your displacement maps seems to be messed up!

The idea of a Displacement Map is to displace the parts that are needed to, but you displaced the whole concrete, not only the details :/

No problem at all man. They're here to be used and abused (and, yes, displaced too). Though, like my good friend Zomb, I wonder if this is the best material for displacement. Such a wall would be relatively flat. I think you're better off working with bump here and playing with the exponent channel (very important for good concrete).

Think so too, concrete walls aren't showing such big areas where displacement would be neccessary. But infact you're getting a slowdown due to subdivisions where they aren't neccessary. So I would stick to bumpmapping as proposed before.

Thanks for your (unanimous) advice !

I'll stick to bump-mapping then. it's been a nice try anyway: it was the first time i went into this xml files and tried to understand them.

BbB: thanks for this material !
I'll try to re-render it with a normal bump map today.
