Indigo last survivor in the race for OpenCL renderer

Post by davide445 » Fri Feb 05, 2016 9:44 am

Reading in a forum I did realize Indigo might be the only (or anyway the most advanced) in the race for new OpenCL renderer, after Vray RT and Blender Cycles (not sure if these are really used).

Reading here https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic ... 33&t=51917 appear Octane 3 it's still pure CUDA, also from this post https://thearender.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 50#p139203 I didn't understand if Thea OpenCL release is delayed to next major release or something, anyway a beta tester told the beta is running since a year and there are still no release.

So I'm even more happy to be here.

In fact they don't write there that they won't support OpenCL for the full release, or am I missing something?

Was not sure how to interpret the statement, and was interested into looking at their news after one of their beta tester state in another forum the beta is going nowhere. But can be just a strong CUDA advocate.
Anyway I wasn't aware about Octane 3 being still CUDA, that was a surprise for me considering the size of the company.

Then there's also Lux Render (open source)

I would hardly compare the speed and output from Lux Render with Indigo. Plus the SketchUp exporter was, to my knowledge (at least at the end of last year), still somewhat basic and buggy.

I don't know, there's quite some speed bumps on their recent technology...

I've made some quick simple interior test and indigo is about 2-3 times faster then lux. All I can see (I'm Maxwell user) that indigo is a lot faster then Maxwell too.

as to my knowledge Otoy is trying to port cuda to all different platforms. with main concerns to run games with his upcoming game-engine brigade on all platforms.
here is the article about it:

wether or not this will be available for all developers is in the stars....

What is it ? A GPU-based GPU emulation ? Sounds weird.

Kind of.
It seems the main goal of Brigade is to standardize a GPU solution for multiplatform game and interactive content rendering. It's cool but if i think about how much support and investment they have financially and other wise....there is still a long way to go to balance the scale.
Thats why i like Indigo...super talented small team with cool folks here to support them.
This is a much more positive construct then selling your stuff to investors....and then ending up making stuff they want you to make.
IMO
