New sculpting program - Sculptris

Post by suvakas » Sat Mar 13, 2010 9:28 pm

Another interesting sculpting app, progammed by one swedish guy only.
It uses dynamic mesh tesselation to add details where necessary during sculpting. Imports and exports to *.OBJ format. Seems to be at early stage, but I just fooled around with it and it was quite fun.

There is a free alpha version available at:
http://drpetter.se/project_sculpt.html

No texturing tools included yet, but as far as i understand those will be added in next builds.
The guy also has a youtube channel. Some interesting videos there.

Quite a little. fun program it's some time since i first heard about it tough.

I tried the alpha version i think, and it was quite good... but wondering if it will remain free, cause if it does it can get quite popular, but for money i dont think it would stand a chance since it's getting quite few of them already :P

As far as I understand, then it will remain free.
This is what the author wrote in some thread on his forum:
On the general issue of releasing source - it will probably happen at some point, when I feel "done" and don't want to spend much more time on its development. Depending on how I approach porting (with the help of other people) it might get source-released earlier.

I found that it messes up meshes when trying to import. It auto tessellates meshes with smoothing, which makes sharp details disappear and fingers look like sticks!

Its still pretty awesome though.

Yep, I noticed that too. You also have to triangulate your mesh before importing.

You have a silder where you can turn of the auto tesselation, altough it's quite handy at times, subdivides while you sculpt :)
