I took some time to put together these computer packages for those of us who have 2 node licenses sitting around and are considering buying a node to help out with rendering, but don't know very much about computer hardware.


Low-End ~ $250/ €175

High-End ~ $1250/ €880

CPU:Intel i7 950 3.06 GHz
Motherboard: EVGA i7 Micro ATX
HDD: WD Caviar 160GB
Power Supply:Athena Power 550W Micro ATX
RAM:OCZ Gold 12 GB 1600 MHz
Case: CM Centurion Micro ATX

I Just won the lottery. ~ $15000/ €10500

CPU:4x AMD Opteron 2.6 Ghz 6-core processor
Motherboard: TYAN Quad-Opteron
HDD: 512 GB SSD disk
Power Supply:PC Power & Cooling 1200W
RAM:32x 4Gb G Skill 800 Mhz DDR2 RAM
Case: No Idea where you would find a MEB form factor case.. this motherboard is huge.

So, this node has 128 GB RAM, 4 Processors, 24 cores, and 62 Ghz total processing power on ONE motherboard.


I'm pretty sure all of these components would work together, let me know if I made any mistakes.

I rather like the approach to have ONE Power Supply for many Mainboards like here
(Sorry German Site, but images & video are quite self explaining)
You save a LOT of Power, Room and money by this!

Instead of a HDD you also can boot from a cheap USB drive, that saves Power, Room and money too


For me most important thing for a slave would also be the "future compatibility" to upcomming CPUs.
By this you can boost your render slaves after a few years and investing some money, without buying everything new!

Im sure some company is working on it. But currently the most i7's you can have is 2.
