how could I have forgotten this one? inkscape, free vector drawing app:
http://www.inkscape.org/
You can import svg into blender and use it for further modeling. There's a great tut on how to use inkscape to draw a floorplan and then import it into blender here:
http://www.opendimension.org/ida/inkscape.php
that's one of my favorite apps lately

hey what about skoogle? (AKA sketchoogle). Someone should write an exporter to Indigo's XML

It imports with step and iges. The only compatible one that goes from Alibre to Blender is stl. I'm not sure about other 3d packages but it seems stl is the only major one (lots of dxf and step formats however).

Moment of Inspiration (“MoI”) is a spline-based modeler -- like a stripped-down version of Rhino.

MoI isn't going to be free forever (currently it is beta).

Here is my list of the best free, honest-to-goodness software on the net:

Blender (goes without saying)

http://blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html

Makehuman (excellent for making humanoids)

http://www.dedalo-3d.com/

TopMod (would make for some great abstract indigo renders)

http://www-viz.tamu.edu/faculty/ergun/r ... /topology/

Freestyle NPR (awesome for NPR renders)

http://freestyle.sourceforge.net/

Virtualdub (great for video editing)

http://www.virtualdub.org/

AviSynth (also great for video)

http://www.avisynth.org/

Voodoo camera tracker (does what it says on the tin)

http://www.digilab.uni-hannover.de/docs/manual.html

Sketchup (free from google - only useful now there is a Blender importer)

http://www.sketchup.com/

ImageMagick (create for batch processing images)

http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php

Swftools (allows you to author .swf in various ways)

http://www.swftools.org/

Screenweaver (turns flash into .exe)

http://screenweaver.com/

Openlaszlo (website authoring with flash)

http://www.openlaszlo.org/

Electric sheep (evolving and awesome screen saver)

http://www.electricsheep.org/

Plasma pong (You will get hooked - awesome!)

http://www.plasmapong.com/

TA Springs (Best RTS of all time, improved and GPLed)

http://taspring.clan-sy.com/

Some of the links given above are for crippled versions/trials of software (which is fine but it does annoy me, personally). Gimp, Wings3D and Inkscape have been mentioned. They are the important ones.
