CPUs: any socket compatible Xeon CPU (In my case the only additional detail is it must be naked)
GPUs: any slot compatible GFX card released as a Mac Edition

Despite this I really have no intention of "upgrading" this machine with perhaps the exception of adding a 3rd RE3 at some point to go 3 way RAID0. I plan to use this machine for 5 years at which point I will replace it with whatever the world has to offer then. :)

I'm sick of arguing about stuff. ;) Time to do something more constructive.

I can put together a new PC system with an Intel I7 920 quad core CPU with 12 gigs of high speed DDR3 ram, a new 1TB HD plus the one I bought recently for backup purposes, new mid range silent video card, fan controller, aftermarket quiet fans and cpu heat sink, a new Antec P183 case and then have the CPU overlocked to over 3.5 ghz for under $1700AUD!
Where? What kind of RAM is that? I just added up pretty much the same thing, except 6 Gb RAM and a GTX 480 and no HD for about $1800CAD. It'd be sweet if there was a cheaper way...

From an Australian e-tailer back then, might even be cheaper now due to the currency rates

Just your mid range Corsair ram triple pack ram.
The problem is your 480gtx cost a ton! :)
I'm only going to plumb in for a quiet 5850 at most. Pity it doesn't do Cuda, and the mid range Nivida parts haven't come out yet. The 470-480gtx are just too hot, noisey, and power hungry for me. You won't be able to silence them too much, and having them run at full speed will make it sound like a vaccum cleaner...

There isn't a huge difference between the 5850 and the 470 to be honest. At least, nothing you would notice.

Awesome comparison. I've also heard that it's not nearly as bad as people have been saying. I don't mind the noise, it's going to be a workhorse that's not in my bedroom. I just bought a 850W power supply, so that should be fine, and I'll have to make do with the heat.

Not all 5850 are the same, and you have to measure the cards properly in a passive system and silent environment
If you watch some videos of the 470-480gtx running they are noisey!

here
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS ... 70/29.html

and compare a Powercolor 5850 PCS+ - which is the quietest 5850 around. The 5870 PCS+ is not much louder.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powe ... us/28.html

Powercolor 5850 PCS+ idle - 24.3dba, load 32.4 dba
Asus 470gtx 30 - 46 load

The 480gtx is even louder.Remeber for every 3dba difference the sound pressure is doubled and 10dba difference sounds twice as loud.
This was in a passive system, it'll be noisier in a regular system with regular fans, unless you put in really quiet aftermarket fans

Anything around 20-24dba at 1 metre is effectively silent. My current system is so quiet I can't even tell if it's on half the time. That's how I build all my systems. A good resource for that http://www.silentpcreview.com/index.php

Sure, he's not going to sleep with it on
but if you work long hours on your PC, like most of us here, having something whirring away constantly gets annoying real fast, and gives me a headache, especially late at night

Thank goodness, PCs can be made a lot quieter these days vs the old 486 days!
It's all in the educated choice of components

Well, I suppose it's all just personal preference. For me, noise level isn't really a major factor.
