Testscene results from Core i7 for Indigo 111

Post by Wedge » Fri Jan 02, 2009 3:26 pm

I recently upgraded my old system and thought I would post some results I grabbed from running a quick testscene.

First I must say I am using Indigo 111 because I have not launched a render in a number of months and this is the last version I became comfortable with.

Indigo 111 on XP32 - Core i7 920 (default clocked)

dispersion_test (testscene, not modified)
5 minutes run time
468,400 samples / second
520 samples per pixel

Just thought I would post it up...The testscene file was not changed, my ini file however, I do not remember so I will post it below:

Code: Select all

<config>
	<renderer_settings>
		<metropolis>false</metropolis>
		<bidirectional>true</bidirectional>

		<downsize_filter>
			<!--<box/>-->
			<mn_cubic>
				<ring>0.2</ring>
				<blur>0.6</blur>
			</mn_cubic>

			<!--<gaussian></gaussian>-->
		</downsize_filter>

		<super_sample_factor>2</super_sample_factor>

		<aperture_diffraction>true</aperture_diffraction>
		<post_process_diffraction>true</post_process_diffraction>
	</renderer_settings>
</config>
And there you have it. I built this machine to replace my old AMD Athlon XP 3000 chip. It is quite fast. My time is as limited as ever to do any scenes for fun right now, but I will try to render something -complicated- soon. (and see how it handles it)

Awseome! I just got an i7 920 as well but haven't finished setting it up yet. Apparently its possible to get up to 40% speed improvements with air cooled overclocking so you should def give it a try - just make sure you use something other than the P.O.S. stock cooler. Also, give it a go on Indigo 1.1.15 for an added turbo boost.

What mb & ram are you using? Also have your tried it with hyperthreading on/off to see if it makes a difference?

My Q6600 gives me only 292234.86230 samples / second, poor sod :(

Indigo 1.1.15 (default ini file)
5 mins 9 seconds
dispersion_test (from testscene folder, unmodified file)
551,700 samples / second
633 samples per pixel

I am not planning on doing any overclocking to this PC. For the mainboard I used an EVGA X58 and for the RAM, DDR3 1333mhz. Appears to be quite a bit faster than the old Indigo version I was using. :)

Hyperthreading is on I believe, and Indigo launches 8 threads. I have not tried turning it off.

I just got i7 920 up and running and I am just floored at the difference in speed compared to my old P4 3ghz.... :D :D :D

I got an Asus p6t motherboard, 6gb of 1666mhz ram, and running win xp 64-bit.

I did the dispersion test as well however...something with dispersion seems to be broken on my side :(

this happens with all my scenes when a material uses cauchy > 0 (ver 1.0.9 does the same thing)

I did a little overclocking and am running at 3.5ghz up from 2.6ghz now and all I can say is Holy Fiddlesticks - my previous machine (3ghz P4) was doing this scene at 68,000 s/sec. The i7 is now doing it at 1,100,000 s/sec now :P

Please post a bigger image, I can't quite make out all the details.

Nice speed :)

Awesome !!
The future is bright and unbiased :twisted:

@neepneep
What cooling do you have? I wonder how far does it goes with stock?

Yes indeed, the future is going to be very bright for unbiased animations as well :D Just need an easy mechanism for rendering them now ...

I have a one of these and 2 fans. Also about 5 other fans around the case and I get max load temp of 65 celsius so far. Stock cooling is apparently about 10c warmer.
I am a bit cautious of going faster for now but it's possible to get it up to 4ghz but thats a bit risky with air cooling.

Hey neepneep,

Would be awesome if you could do a benchmark comparison between HyperThreading on & off.
I'm very interested how much the extra threads kick in, afaik it should be like +50% speed up!?!
