Using the GPU/Cell/Larrabee/? as a coprocessor without having to code especially for each of these platforms.
Multiplatform (unlike the compute shaders of DX11), royality free, new, fits into the gpgpu hype... and maaaaybe could somehow magically make indigo faster.

Also without loss of accuracy? One of the main reasons, Ono didn't GPUify, was that graphicscards often are/where limited to 32bit floats where Indigo uses a lot of 64bit ones...

64bit can be facked if one realy wants. ive seen code in bash script that hacked together floating point decimals (bash only supports integers)

Hack if you want 64bit floats on current gpu hardware is going to be sloooooooow or inaccurate take your pick

Even then like in the Nehalem debate:
Every improvement is an improvement - and going OpenCL won't mean that the CPU doesn't work any more, it would just mean that you can reder on other processors as well.
