First official beta is due next month. Performance in the 200-300,000 poly range is largely dependent on the hardware you're using, regardless of 3d software used. In general faster bus/RAM speeds and decent video card are the most important.

Wow, this is how blender should have been. Easy on the eyes and easy to use. When you open it up, everything is understandable almost instantly. The open menu also doesn't give you a case of &*^&@!

Out of curiosity what is the advantage to having material slots and the actual materials as separate entities? Is it kind of like a hierarchy for organizing materials?
I really love how they're done the material previewing though... How the preview viewer is right there, integrated with the material adjustments and you have easily recognizable icons to switch between several preview scenes...
The selection is looking really neat too. I love how it's so interactive/flexible. It's crazy how you can press space bar and search all the commands too..
EDIT : In the 1st tour (user interface) sounds like he spit something out while he was introducing it..

I think the materials slot thing has to do with materials being used on more than one Object. So you could have say 3 materials in your scene. 2 on a cube and one on a sphere. And so by opening a new slot on the sphere you could then pick an existing material to put in it instead of creating a new one with the same properties.
I think. He explained it in another video but that was way back and i forget what the actual reason was.

This is a great series. One of the the biggest things that drew me to blender originally was fluid simulation.. I can't wait to mess around with it..
