Another kind of benchmark...

Post by dougal2 » Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:23 pm

Inspired by BbB's discussion about hair, I've decided to see how many poly's I can squeeze into a single .obj to render in indigo.

I also wonder what other people have managed.

I'm using my quad this evening, loaded with 4GB DDR2 PC6400 800mhz RAM, running Ubuntu 64bit, Maya 2008 64bit and indigo 1.0.6 under wine-0.9.54.

So far this evening I've got as far as

Code: Select all

'|hairSystemShape1MeshGroup|hairSystemShape1Main|hairSystemShape1MainShape'...
	3474592 vertices (106.036 MB)
	4995888 triangles (76.231 MB)
with no complaints.
Maya used a max of 1.3GB during export, 1.0GB after export.
Indigo ran under wine using 860mb.
The .obj file is 446mb.
Export took no more than 2 minutes.

It's late now, so this is my opening bid. I'll try for higher tomorrow.

ok one more. i really must sleep now.

Code: Select all

'|hairSystemShape1MeshGroup|hairSystemShape1Main|hairSystemShape1MainShape'...
	5471732 vertices (166.984 MB)
	7948398 triangles (121.283 MB)
i did have it set to 10,000,000 tris but indigo crashed on startup, so i lowered it. looks like indigo/wine are going to be the limiting factor here.

Cool test. You should try the test with 64-bit linux version of Indigo (version 1.0.1).

The 8M tris object took about 40sec to load into indigo - as for actual rendering speed, i haven't noticed much slowdown.

this one is a mere 2.75M tris, and is based on one of Maya's example files. I coloured it pink, and tweaked a parameter here and there.
Notice how each clump is plaited

Apart from the baldness it looks amazing. I'm almost inspired to do a character piece with hair now.

amazing indeed!
A character piece means a human or something furry or a character, only made of hair?
