LuxRender, a new open-source unbiased renderer

Post by Oiram » Sat Feb 09, 2008 5:53 am

LuxRender is a new, open-source, free software rendering system for physically correct, unbiased image synthesis.

LuxRender comprises an interactive GUI, a command line tool, a Blender exporter plugins and a C/C++ API that allows embedding LuxRender into third-party applications.

Hi Oiram, thanks for the information. Some time ago Radiance was a part of this website (for quite awhile I think) and I think he has worked with Ono. (Ono writes Indigo and owns this website as far as I know) Not too long ago Radiance left and is now one of the main people behind Lux Render. (again, as far as I know)

All of this information I tell is what I understand to be correct. Just some news that you may not know. :)

radiance never worked on indigo, he set up the site and the forum and everything. but yeah, i think luxrender is his own project now.
not much seems to be going on with it, though i could be wrong. anyone know how theyre doing?

@StompinTom

They are doing well and have some very good people in the dev
team, even Csaba Kelemen (hungrycat render) is giving a hand.
And right now they are talking about different techniques and they
are getting the core done. It's still a lot of work to do till lux is on
the same level of quality that Indigo or the other commercial
renderer provide. I wish them all the best and hope that we all
have a new toy to play with soon. And I expect lux to be a very
cool workhorse for production too. ;o))

They could need some more people that do exporters! 8) :D ;)

we're all really excited about kelemen's appearance :) the new metropolis sampler he posted is very interesting, i've been playing with it and am integrating it (no pun intended) into my renderer now to see how it works. a nice feature is that it no longer needs a warmup phase, that simplifies code nicely. a not-so-nice feature is that current igi files will be incompatible with the new approach, and take 33% more space. anyway, i suppose you can all expect to see it in indigo soon, as i'm fairly sure nick is playing with it too!

with a bit of luck we'll finally find out what delta sampling is all about, nick and i have spent quite some time wondering about that...

BTW is there a link to where Kelemen talks about his new Metroplis Sampler?

it's in my "theoretical discussion" thread on the architecture sub-forum.

Just tried out LuxRender.
Its seems pretty fast, it already is pretty advanced and the gui of the program is pretty neat.
But i don't like to set up the materials in the Blender material editor and the interface of the exporter is confusing.

Even though it pretty much feels like one big Indigo rip-off (sorry, but it does) it's a pretty sweet renderer that I'll definitely keep an eye on.

@SimonLarsen

Just curious, why does it feel like a rip-off, just because of the exporter? And
AFAIK there will be an integrated material editor sooner or later. Right now
it feels for me, that luxrender is at a stage where Indigo was over a year
ago. Anyway, I love competition as it is just good for us, the users! :D :D ;)

btw. the CVS version is much better then the RC4 and zuegs did a good
start with the exporter and the integrated material editor. ;o)

Yeah, pretty much the exporter, but just found out Zeugs did it, which explains a lot. ^^

And yeah, i know there will be a material system later.

And yes, competition is good. It looks very promising. :D
