Traditionally the first of May is dedicated to revendications for better work conditions, that's it's former purpose.

The 1st of may ever was a strike in Chicago in 1886 IIRC (they told that at TV yesterday ;) ), the second was another strike in Paris in 1936 (wich lead to payed vacations !). It then became international. Initially it's all about strikes, that's why it's conflictual.

But a more recent problem we have here in France are rioters (breakers as we call them), they profite of peacefull demonstrations to break shop down and robb.

Never support breakers if you are in such a demonstration, they'll just kill the movement and lead to repression :)
