Do you only use your own materials?

Hi,
I have a question that has been bugging me for a while, just asking for your
Personal opinion:
I model as a hobby, and is ones work only "original" if every last material, every last object is created by yourself?
On the one side, every stroke of a painting and its effects is done by the brush and skills of the artist.
On the other side: why invent the wheel over and over again? Why not use a cool material (and reference it of course)?
When is a scene not "your" scene anymore? When 50% of the materials aren't yours? 90%?
Or is the idea, the composition "mine", the "original"?
Thanks for your input
Dennis
